It’s safe to say that the U.S. is in something of a small business era: According to Pew Research Center, 86% of Americans believe that small businesses are having a positive effect on the way things are going in the country. Retailers make up a significant portion of that figure. In fact, from 2021-2023, retail ranked as one of the top 10 sectors for total business applications. That makes now a great time to start your own retail operation if you’ve been on the fence about it.
In the spirit of Independent Retailer Month, the SBA is proud to share resources that aspiring entrepreneurs can utilize to claim their place in the independent retail community.
- SBA Business Guide: Getting started is half the battle. The SBA Business Guide will help you plan, launch, manage, and grow — and hit every milestone in the process. Learn how to write your business plan, apply for licenses and permits, hire and manage employees, and much more. Even after you’ve been in business for a while, the SBA Business Guide is a continuous resource you can tap into for information on services like funding.
- Resource Partner Network: SBA partners with organizations like SCORE, Small Business Development Centers, Women’s Business Centers and Veterans Business Outreach Centers which provide training, mentorship and other resources for entrepreneurs across the country. You can find local SBA partners by entering your zip code.
- Funding Programs: Not everyone qualifies for conventional financing. With this in mind, the SBA reduces risk to lenders, enabling easier access to capital for aspiring business owners. Ranging from small to large, loans guaranteed by the SBA can be used for most business purposes, including long-term fixed assets. Use the SBA’s Lender Match tool to connect with an approved lender in your area.
There’s plenty of room in the small business boom. Visit sba.gov/starting for the details you need to get your retail operation up and running.
