Thriving Artisans Crafting Community Connections at the Hannah Grimes Marketplace in Keene

Hannah Grimes Market Place

Hannah Grimes Marketplace has been a key fixture on Main Street in Keene for 27 years. Founded by Mary Ann Kristiansen in 1997, the store offers a diverse range of local and regional products, from food and candles to art and furniture. Named after Hannah Grimes, an 18th century local who contributed to the community’s economy through crafting and selling goods.

The Marketplace’s mission goes beyond retail; it serves as a business incubator dedicated to supporting local artists, farmers and crafts people giving them a bricks and mortar location to sell products directly to shoppers who relish supporting local businesses. The Marketplace additionally provides access to mentorship and resources that support these entrepreneurs, while fostering community engagement and strengthening the local economy. The Marketplace’s early success led to the establishment of the Hannah Grimes Center for Entrepreneurship, which supports various stages of entrepreneurship.

Among these artisans, three distinct groups emerge. First, there are the hobbyists-passionate individuals who pour their hearts into their creations, eager to share their work with the world. Next, established regional businesses like SBA 2023 NH Home-Based Business of the Year, Beeline Skin Care, a woman owned and operated company that developed a line of hypoallergenic skin care products based on honey and beeswax. Finally, there are the small operations, often just starting out or looking to break into the retail scene after experiencing success at craft fairs.

Justin Somma, the manager, dedicates himself to working with 200 gifted artisans and creators within a 150-mile radius. Interestingly, 80% of the products shelved come from artisans located within 50 miles, showcasing the rich talent that lies in the immediate area. Justin is not just the manager of the Marketplace; he is a mentor and a source of inspiration for these budding entrepreneurs. Every day he engages with artisans that have much to learn about packaging, pricing, regulations, finances, and more.

Justin’s mission extends far beyond simply increasing the sales at the Marketplace. He envisions a thriving artisan community where makers can scale their business to their own desire. With every mentoring session he holds, he feels a sense of purpose knowing that he is empowering local talent, fostering creativity and inspiring artisans to reach new heights as they share their unique gifts with the community. Future plans include launching an online store to market New England made products nationwide and a business gifting program to increase exposure for regional artisans.

The Marketplace is a must visit destination for both locals and tourists seeking one-of-a-kind items and authentic New Hampshire made goods. More than just a store, it is a celebration of the community’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit where every item tells a story of local talent and passion.
