WILLISTON, ND - Cherie Olson Harms is the president and CEO of Leonardite Products LLC, a mining and processing operation in Williston, ND since 2008. Leonardite is an oxidized lignite found naturally in Western North Dakota. Once dried and sized, it is used in agricultural fertilizers and in oil drilling fluids. Leonardite Products ships to customers across the U.S. and exports to 12 countries worldwide.

The operation had been purchased from another company. Rebuilding the processing plant, idle due to a fire, was key to building a viable company. Additional challenges were faced including embezzlement and the pandemic. Leveraging several SBA loan programs and the North Dakota Small Business Development Center, Harms has met the challenges with innovation and leadership that has led to better margins and consistent net profits.

After a statewide competition, Harms was selected as SBA’s 2024 North Dakota Small Business Person of the Year. This annual award recognizes established small business owners who demonstrate staying power. Winners must also show growth in net worth and business expansion, increase in jobs and sales, response to adversity and contributions to community-oriented projects.
