Family Really Matters
Lawrence and Ti’Juana Gholson met in Dinwiddie County, VA. Their relationship evolved into a marriage between two people who care a great deal about family and community. In 2000, after working in human services, the couple decided to start FamMat Services, LLC.
FamMat Services' health mission is to provide innovative support, resources, and quality community services for people with intellectual and/or other developmental disabilities, and mental health issues to prevent and/or eliminate institutionalization. The business offers In-Home Counseling, mentoring, and family services for youth and adults. The couple funded the venture with proceeds from the sale of their home and retirement resources.
Lawrence and Ti’Juana humbly admitted they knew nothing about starting and running a business. They launched their business as sole proprietors and had no idea of the various legal entities.
FamMat Services started working with the local Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The SBDC Small Business Development Centers provide counseling and training to small businesses including working with SBA to develop and provide informational tools to support business start-ups and existing business expansion. The couple worked extensively with SBDC staff member, Dr. Debra Farly. In addition, they are receiving counseling support from Carl Knoblock, SBA VA District Director. During the COVID pandemic, FamMat Services received a $500k SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL). FamMat Services started with 20 employees, but since the impact of the pandemic, the firm currently has 10 employees.
FamMat Services used the funds to address staffing and technology issues due to the pandemic. Also, the success of the business has given the couple the ability to do things in the community, remove barriers, and coach employees to become home and business owners.
The SBA VA District Office recognized FamMat Services for SBA’s 70th Legacy Anniversary. The business was honored with an event and trophy highlighting its accomplishments. This writer asked the couple what advice they have for those wanting to start a business.
“You must have a winning team. We did not know the value of a winning team. Teaching people to network and develop relationships. In addition, step out of your box and develop a relationship with a banker, insurance agent, lawyer, and accountant,” said Lawrence and Ti’Juana Gholson.
