Unfamiliar with patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets? Learn about intellectual property (IP) basics and potential ways to protect your innovations as you transition from idea to product. The session will cover:

  • What is the USPTO?
  • An overview of intellectual property types: patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets
  • Why innovators and entrepreneurs should consider protecting their IP
  • How to get started in protecting your intellectual property.

Join the United States Patent and Trademark Office as they share this information from the Eastern Regional Outreach Office. 

Presenter Jeanette Parker is a Primary Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark office (USPTO) in the Graphical User Interface area. Prior to joining the USPTO in 2012, Jeanette worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley. Jeanette holds degrees in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Juris Doctor.  Jeanette is currently on a detail as an Assistant Outreach Coordinator at the Eastern Regional Outreach Office in Alexandria, Virginia. As an assistant outreach Coordinator, Jeanette is involved in promoting economic development by engaging with various communities to educate and provide various resources offered by the USPTO.
