2000 ANNUAL REPORT
Utah’s SBA office embraced the new millennium with a record loan volume, 810 loans for $167 million. In other words, SBA helped 810 Utah small businesses receive the financing they needed to operate and grow. When all SBA programs are combined, SBA’s programs contributed more than $339 million to Utah’s economy. SBA’s 7(a) and 504 loan programs, alone, have helped create or preserve an estimated 8,200 Utah jobs.
Not only did Utah businesses benefit from new loans in record number, they repaid them. Losses on Utah’s SBA loan portfolio average under one and a half percent for the last ten years, an exceptionally low rate.
Speaking of the new millennium, SBA helped sound the "wake-up" call helping Utahns survive Y2K without serious disruption.
Our Utah office ranked high compared with other SBA offices in achieving agency goals. For example, Utah’s 504 loan volume ranked fourth in the nation.
I am especially proud to announce record loan volume to "new market" businesses (owned by women, minorities, and veterans). Utah’s minority-owned 8(a) contractors received awards of over $50 million in federal contracts this year. Small business owned by Utah’s minorities and disadvantaged persons, honored in yearly SBA MEDWEEK celebrations, continue to grow in number and success as they become an increasingly vibrant factor in Utah’s small business community.
SBA helped small business in other ways too. SBA and its partners provided business counseling and training to over and training to over 13,000 Utahns this year. SBA’s springtime year 2000 small business Week paid tribute to Utah’s exceptional entrepreneurial spirit.
Of course, SBA’s banner year did not solely result from the hard work of our Utah SBA staff. SBA success relies on the unflagging support of our many partners to whom I express warm thanks.
