SBA Focuses on Recovery, Adaptation, and Innovation During National Small Business Week (Sept. 22-24)

As a veteran entrepreneur who has carved a niche for himself in software development and Information Technology (IT) transformations, Timothy Porter exemplifies the American spirit and the grit and determination it takes to succeed.

In 2009, Timothy – an Army veteran with a passion for technology and IT – taught himself to develop mobile apps and in 2011, his business Appddiction Studio, LLC was formed. Appddiction Studio provides premier and innovative IT transformations by implementing state of the art agile framework and methodologies. Since the inception of his small business, Timothy has shown creativity, determination, and resourcefulness, turning to the SBA for business advice and support. Because of his innovative spirit and entrepreneurial successes, Timothy has been named the SBA’s 2020 National Small Business Person of the Year. The award is part of National Small Business Week (NSBW), when SBA recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Timothy received initial start-up assistance from his local Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) and continues to receive guidance from the University of Texas at San Antonio Small Business Development Center (SBDC). Appddiction Studio is now a part of the SBA’s 8(a) Business Development Program and is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business with a national presence.

In 2016, Appddiction Studio received an SBA-guaranteed loan. From 2017 to 2018, the company experienced a 254% increase in revenue because of their successful procurement of contracts through the Department of Defense (DoD) for software development and project management. Appddiction Studio has established itself as the go-to small business to support enterprise transformations for DoD clients.

Championing Small Business Success with Year-Round Educational Resources

The SBA is a dedicated advocate for small businesses, guiding our nation’s small business owners through fruitful and challenging times alike. For the past 50 years, we have used NSBW as an opportunity to spotlight exceptional U.S. small businesses like Timothy’s. While this year’s NSBW continues to honor small business owners for their shared ingenuity, it will also recognize the resiliency they have shown in navigating the coronavirus pandemic while supporting their employees and communities.

The free NSBW virtual conference, held Sept. 22-24, includes sessions offering retooling and innovative practices for entrepreneurs as our nation’s small businesses look to pivot and recover toward a stronger economy. The virtual conference will also honor National Small Business Award winners and will recognize top small business advocates.

We encourage current and prospective small business owners to follow in Timothy’s footsteps and take full advantage of the SBA resources at your disposal. This includes mentorship and guidance from local resource partners, federal contracting help through contracting assistance programs, and financial resources such as SBA-guaranteed loans and COVID-19 relief programs. We look forward to sharing resources for rebuilding and regrowth with you this NSBW and beyond.
